Rome sits inland in the Lazio region but is close to several volcanic lakes—most notably Bracciano, Albano, Nemi and Martignano—where locals and visitors consider swimming. Water temperatures vary by lake and season: in winter (December–February) surface temperatures commonly fall to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F); spring (March–May) sees warming to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F); summer (June–August) brings the warmest conditions, often 20–26 °C (68–79 °F); and autumn (September–November) usually records 15–22 °C (59–72 °F). These ranges reflect shallow, sheltered basins that respond quickly to air temperature, with Bracciano often among the warmest in summer and smaller lakes cooling faster.
Swimming is typically allowed but only in designated beaches, lidos and monitored areas for reasons of safety, water quality and environmental protection. Some lake shores restrict bathing because the reservoirs feed drinking supplies, are within protected parks, or to prevent erosive impact on sensitive ecosystems, so local rules and signage should be checked.
