Florence (Firenze) sits on the Arno in the heart of Tuscany, but the nearest recreational lakes — above all Lake Bilancino to the north — are where visitors head for lake swimming. Water temperatures vary by season and by the lake’s size and depth: in spring you can expect roughly 8–16 °C (46–61 °F), summer highs commonly reach 20–28 °C (68–82 °F) on shallower, sun-warmed basins, autumn cools back to about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F), and winter surface temperatures often fall to around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F). Smaller, shallower lakes warm faster in summer but also cool quickly in shoulder seasons.
Swimming is possible at several lakes near Florence, but conditions and rules differ. Many reservoirs and recreational lakes open supervised swimming areas in summer for safety and because water quality is monitored; other lakes are used for drinking water supply or are protected habitats, so swimming can be restricted or prohibited.
