Drogheda is a historic port town located on the mouth of the River Boyne, where the river meets the Irish Sea. Due to this tidal location, the water temperature of the Boyne near Drogheda is influenced by both river and sea conditions. Generally, river temperatures in Ireland are quite cool; you can expect a seasonal range from approximately 4∘C (39∘F) in the depths of winter to a milder peak of around 16∘C (61∘F) during late summer. These temperatures are cold enough to warrant caution against cold shock, especially for casual or long-duration swimming.
While swimming in the river generally is not advisable for recreational purposes due to the cold temperatures, strong tidal currents near the mouth, and water quality that can be variable, the Boyne River is the site of a significant and well-organised annual open water event. The Boyne Swim is a competitive 2.7-kilometer race that takes place each summer, attracting participants from across the country.
