In winter, the Liffey’s temperature usually ranges from 5–7°C (41–45°F), while in summer it typically rises to 15–18°C (59–64°F). On particularly warm days in July or August, the surface may briefly reach 19°C (66°F), though the deeper or tidal sections remain cooler due to the mixing of seawater near the estuary. These moderate conditions make the Liffey suitable for short swims or open-water events during the warmer months.
Swimming in the River Liffey is officially allowed but only in certain areas and usually as part of organized or supervised events, such as the annual Liffey Swim, which has taken place for over a century. Outside such occasions, strong currents, variable water quality, and boat traffic mean casual swimming in central Dublin is discouraged. However, the river remains a focus for kayaking, rowing, and sightseeing.
