Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, sits at the tidal reaches of the River Suir, where freshwater from inland meets the influence of the sea. The river’s water temperature here reflects both the Atlantic climate and estuarine mixing. In winter, temperatures generally range between 6–8°C (43–46°F), while in summer they rise to around 15–18°C (59–64°F). On warm, calm days in late July or August, surface temperatures in sheltered parts of the Suir may briefly reach 19°C (66°F). The tidal movement and deeper channel near Waterford keep the water cooler than smaller inland rivers, but it remains relatively mild for most of the year compared with other Irish waterways.
Swimming in the River Suir around Waterford is possible but not officially designated in the city itself due to strong tidal currents, boat traffic, and variable water depth.
