Savonlinna, located in South Savo in eastern Finland, lies in the middle of the Saimaa lake system, surrounded by clear waters and forested islands. The city’s unique landscape is dominated by lakes such as Haukivesi, Pihlajavesi, and Haapavesi, which together form one of Finland’s most scenic inland water areas. The water temperature changes significantly throughout the year. After the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface temperature is around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it warms to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, the lakes around Savonlinna typically reach 18–22 °C (64–72 °F). In shallow, sheltered bays, the temperature can occasionally exceed 23 °C (73 °F). By late September, the temperature drops below 10 °C (50 °F), and freezing usually begins in November.
Swimming in Savonlinna’s lakes is allowed and very popular during the summer months. The water is clean and safe for bathing, and the city maintains several public beaches, such as those at Varparanta and Kyrönniemi.
