Joensuu, located in the heart of North Karelia, offers abundant swimming opportunities in its surrounding freshwater bodies, including the Pielisjoki River and nearby parts of Lake Pyhäselkä. Swimming is universally permitted at public beaches and accessible shores, thanks to Finland's Everyman’s Rights, which grants public access to natural waters for recreation. Designated public beaches along the river and lake ensure safe entry and monitored water quality, making the water bodies a key part of the city's summer leisure activities.
The water temperature in Joensuu's lakes and rivers is highly seasonal. During the extended winter period, typically from November to May, the water bodies are frozen, with the temperature beneath the ice remaining a very cold 0∘C to 4∘C. The optimal period for comfortable swimming is short, peaking in July. In mid-summer, the surface water in shallower areas can reach a maximum temperature range of 18∘C to 22∘C. Outside of this brief warm spell, the water remains cool, suitable only for the invigorating tradition of cold-water swimming or a very quick dip.
