Mikkeli, located in South Savo in southeastern Finland, lies in the heart of the Saimaa lake district, surrounded by numerous lakes such as Saimaa, Visulahti, and Siekkilänjärvi. The area is characterized by clean freshwater and gentle, forested shorelines. The water temperature in these lakes varies greatly throughout the year. After the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface temperature is around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). As summer progresses, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, the lakes around Mikkeli typically reach 18–22 °C (64–72 °F). Shallow and sheltered areas may briefly exceed 23 °C (73 °F). By late September, temperatures fall below 10 °C (50 °F), and freezing usually begins again in November.
Swimming in Mikkeli’s lakes is allowed and very popular during the summer months. The water is clean and safe, and the city maintains several well-equipped beaches, including those at Urpola and Kaihunlahti. Calm conditions and moderate summer warmth make swimming comfortable for all ages. While the water remains cool in spring and autumn, midsummer offers refreshing and pleasant conditions for swimming, boating, and other leisure activities surrounded by South Savo’s lake scenery.
