Location & Local Information
Imatra is situated by the vast Lake Saimaa and the quickly flowing River Vuoksi, both offering swimming opportunities protected by Finland's Everyman’s Rights. Swimming is freely permitted along the accessible shores, and the city maintains several official public beaches on both Saimaa and the smaller Lake Immalanjärvi. Due to the high flow rate of the Vuoksi River, swimming directly in its rapids is prohibited and highly dangerous, although special 'ice floating' activities are offered using dry suits.
The water temperature exhibits strong seasonal changes. During the winter (approximately December to April), Lake Saimaa and the smaller lakes are typically frozen, with sub-surface water temperatures ranging from 0∘C to 4∘C. The main comfortable swimming season is in July. During this month, surface temperatures in Saimaa and the local lakes usually range from 18∘C to 21∘C, although the temperature of the fast-flowing Vuoksi River may be slightly cooler due to mixing. Water quality at designated beaches is routinely monitored by the city's health authorities throughout the summer.
