Gulf of Aden Water Temperature Today & Regional Overview
We find every place where you can swim and show you the water temperature there today and throughout the year.
Current Water Temperature
The water temperature in the Gulf of Aden today ranges from 87°F (Aden, Yemen) to 88°F (Djibouti, Djibouti).
As of today, the minimum water temperature in the Gulf of Aden is above 82°F (28°C). This is very warm water, which may feel almost hot to most people. Swimming in such conditions is perfect for those seeking relaxation and comfort in the water. These waters are often preferred for relaxation in hot weather, as the water temperature does not cool the body significantly. However, it is important to remember that in such warm waters, caution is necessary, as prolonged exposure without rest can lead to overheating.
It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

The Gulf of Aden, lying between the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, has generally warm sea surface temperatures that vary with the seasons and local currents. Broadly speaking, surface temperatures typically range from about 22 °C in the coolest months to around 31 °C in the warmest. In winter (December–February) temperatures are commonly in the lower to mid 20s °C, spring (March–May) sees a gradual rise into the mid to upper 20s °C, summer (June–August) often brings the warmest readings with many areas around 27–31 °C, and autumn (September–November) usually remains warm, commonly between about 26–30 °C. Coastal upwelling and monsoon-driven changes can produce local departures from these averages, so conditions vary along different parts of the gulf.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming in the Gulf of Aden is physically possible year-round because surface waters are generally warm enough for recreational use, especially from spring through autumn when temperatures are comfortably above 24 °C. That said, whether swimming is advisable depends on local conditions: strong currents, tidal flows and monsoon-driven seas can make some areas hazardous; inshore upwelling can cool water unexpectedly; and heavy commercial shipping, limited coastal infrastructure, variable water quality near ports, marine life hazards and regional security concerns have to be taken into account. Where shoreline facilities, lifeguards and local guidance exist, swimming can be enjoyed safely during calmer periods; otherwise following local advisories and exercising caution is important.
