The Volturno in Molise is an alpine- and spring-fed river whose temperature varies with altitude, season and flow. In winter the water is cold, often around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F) in higher and faster stretches, while lower reaches can register slightly warmer values. Spring brings warming as snowmelt and sunshine raise temperatures into the roughly 8–16 °C (46–61 °F) range. During summer many calm pools and wider stretches warm to roughly 16–24 °C (61–75 °F), sometimes reaching the upper 20s °C (around 78–82 °F) in shallow, slow-moving spots. Autumn sees a steady cooling back toward spring values as flows increase.
Swimming in the Volturno is practiced locally, especially in summer where gentle currents and warmer shallows make bathing comfortable. Whether swimming is formally allowed depends on the municipality and occasional prohibitions tied to water quality or safety; after heavy rain, strong currents or turbidity can make swimming risky and some areas may be temporarily closed.
