Location & Local Information
The Kalmius River flows through southeastern Ukraine, starting in Donetsk Oblast and continuing southward until it reaches the Sea of Azov. Its upper course passes through urban and industrial zones, while the lower part flows through open steppe landscapes with more natural surroundings. During summer, water temperatures in the Kalmius usually range from 23–27°C, and during heatwaves can rise to about 28°C. The river has a moderate current and several small reservoirs along its course, which help to stabilize water levels and create calm sections suitable for swimming.
In smaller towns and rural areas along the Kalmius, people often use the riverbanks for recreation, swimming, or fishing. The most comfortable swimming conditions are found in the lower reaches, where the water is cleaner and the flow slower. The combination of warm water, gentle banks, and open scenery makes the Kalmius a pleasant, if modest, river for summer relaxation in southeastern Ukraine.
