** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Hallingdalselva in Buskerud (Hallingdal) shows pronounced seasonal variation in water temperature because it is fed by mountain runoff and regulated stretches. During spring snowmelt (roughly March–May) temperatures are low, commonly around 0–8 °C (32–46 °F). Early summer (June) typically warms to about 8–15 °C (46–59 °F), while the warmest months, July–August, can see sheltered, slow-moving areas reach roughly 12–20 °C (54–68 °F) on sunny years. By autumn temperatures fall back toward 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), and in winter many stretches approach freezing, about 0–4 °C (32–39 °F), with ice forming in calmer sections.
Swimming in Hallingdalselva is generally possible and commonly practised in calmer, accessible reaches during the warmest weeks, because Norwegian outdoor access traditions and public sites make river bathing feasible. However, not all parts are suitable or safe: strong currents, cold shock from meltwater, sudden flow changes from hydropower releases, and rapid deepening at some banks mean swimmers must choose spots carefully. Some areas near dams, intakes or private installations can be restricted. Water quality is often good in rural Hallingdal, but local conditions should be checked and standard precautions taken — enter slowly, avoid solitary swims in fast-flowing stretches, and heed local signage.
