The Engure River in western Latvia typically shows marked seasonal variation in water temperature. In winter months the river is often at or just below freezing when ice is present, about 0–1 °C (32–34 °F). During spring the thaw and runoff keep temperatures low, commonly ranging from roughly 2–10 °C (36–50 °F) depending on air temperature and flow. Summer is when the warmest conditions occur, with many stretches warming to approximately 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) on warm, calm days; shallower, slow-moving sections and areas near the river mouth can be a degree or two warmer. In autumn temperatures generally fall back into the 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) band as cooling air and increased flow reduce warming.
Swimming in the Engure River is possible and is most common in the warmer summer months when water is comfortable for bathing. Whether swimming is advisable depends on local conditions: water clarity and quality, current strength, depth, submerged vegetation and any municipal or nature-protection restrictions.
