Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast
❌ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 50°F (10°C) to 54°F (12°C). The water is slightly warmer, but still cool for most people. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. Even experienced swimmers may feel discomfort if they stay in the water for too long. To improve comfort and safety, a wetsuit can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Irbe, a short coastal river and estuarine channel in western Latvia that connects inland waters to the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic, shows pronounced seasonal variation in water temperature. In winter the surface commonly hovers around 0 to 2 °C (32 to 36 °F) and can freeze in sheltered sections; spring brings a steady rise from roughly 2 to 10 °C (36 to 50 °F) as ice melts and runoff warms. Summer temperatures in calmer, shallow stretches typically range from about 15 to 20 °C (59 to 68 °F), and during warm spells surface readings can reach the low twenties, around 21 to 24 °C (70 to 75 °F). Autumn cooling takes the river back down to roughly 5 to 12 °C (41 to 54 °F) before winter refreezes begin.
Swimming in the Irbe is possible in summer when temperatures are comfortable, but it is not universally advisable everywhere along the channel. The mouth and connecting strait can feature strong tidal currents, variable depths and shipping traffic, and sections may be brackish or affected by local runoff, all of which affect safety and water quality. Local signage, municipal rules and weather conditions should be checked before entering the water; winter swimming is only for experienced, properly prepared participants because of ice and near‑freezing temperatures.
