** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Ririe Reservoir in eastern Idaho experiences marked seasonal swings in water temperature. In winter the surface can approach freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), often with ice forming in shallow bays. Spring warming typically brings surface waters into the 40–55°F (4–13°C) range as runoff and snowmelt continue. By mid to late summer the reservoir’s surface commonly warms to about 60–75°F (15–24°C), with the warmest readings in July and August; deeper water remains noticeably colder. In autumn the surface cools again toward roughly 50–60°F (10–16°C) as air temperatures drop and stratification breaks down. Depth, inflow from creeks, and daily weather all influence these values, so local conditions can differ from these general ranges.
Swimming is permitted in Ririe Reservoir as part of its recreational use, but it is unmanaged — there are no lifeguards and some areas near the dam, boat ramps, or steep drop-offs are unsuitable or restricted. The relatively cool temperatures, especially below the surface, and boat traffic make swimming a riskier activity than at designated beaches; cold-water shock and hypothermia are real concerns even in summer. Visitors should swim with a companion, use personal flotation devices if uncertain, avoid confined or high-traffic boating zones, and follow any posted rules or advisories at the site.
