*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Pontiac Lake, a shallow reservoir in southeast Michigan, follows the familiar seasonal pattern of inland lakes in the region. Surface temperatures in winter hover near freezing, roughly 32°F (0°C), and the lake often develops ice cover. In spring the water warms slowly, typically ranging from about 40–60°F (4–15°C) as snowmelt and cool spring air moderate temperatures. By midsummer surface readings commonly reach the upper 60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit, approximately 20–26°C, though surface warmth can be higher on hot calm days. In early fall the top layer cools again, generally falling into the 50s–60s°F range (10–18°C). Deeper water remains colder year-round and summer stratification can leave cooler layers beneath the warm surface.
Swimming is possible at Pontiac Lake during the warmer months, especially at areas managed as part of the recreation area, but availability depends on seasonal management and local rules. Designated swimming spots may not always be lifeguarded, and conditions such as water temperature, seasonal algal blooms, boat traffic and ice cover determine safety and access. Because spring and fall waters are often brisk and deeper layers remain cold, swimmers should be cautious of cold-water shock and hypothermia. Checking current conditions and following posted advisories is the best way to judge whether swimming is appropriate on any given day.
