* Current - Actual water temperature value

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Navajo Reservoir, which spills across the Colorado–New Mexico border, tends to have fairly cool water because of its size, depth and higher elevation. Seasonal surface temperatures commonly run from near freezing in winter—around 32–40°F (0–4°C)—to spring values roughly in the 40s–60°F (4–15°C). In summer the warmest surface readings are usually in the 60s to low 70s°F, about 15–24°C, with the warmest shallow coves sometimes reaching the mid-70s°F (around 24°C) on hot, calm days. Temperatures drop again in fall, often returning to the 40s–50s°F (5–15°C) by late season. Deeper water remains colder year-round, so even on warm days swimmers can encounter sudden chilly pockets.

Swimming is generally allowed and the reservoir is managed for multiple recreational uses, including designated shoreline and beach access at state park areas. Because there are no universal lifeguards, and because water temperatures can cause cold-shock or hypothermia, visitors are advised to choose marked swimming spots, wear a life jacket when boating, and be mindful of boat traffic, wind-driven waves and underwater hazards. Local park rules and seasonal conditions determine where and when shore access is safest, so planning ahead and exercising caution is important.
