Lokka Reservoir, known in Finnish as Lokan tekojärvi, is an artificial lake in central Lapland, located mainly within the Sodankylä municipality. It is one of Finland’s largest reservoirs, created to regulate the flow of the River Kemijoki. Due to its northern latitude and broad surface area, the water temperature in Lokka Reservoir remains cool even in summer. In spring, after the ice melts in late May or early June, the surface water temperature is around 3–6 °C (37–43 °F). During midsummer, it rises gradually to 12–16 °C (54–61 °F), and in July, during the warmest period, the water typically reaches 17–19 °C (63–66 °F). Shallow areas may briefly warm to about 20 °C (68 °F). In autumn, the temperature drops quickly below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake usually freezes again by late October.
Swimming in Lokka Reservoir is allowed, but it is not very common because of the low water temperature and variable water levels. However, on calm summer days, locals and visitors sometimes take short swims near sandy shores or piers, enjoying the clear air and quiet landscape. The water is clean and pure, making it suitable for brief, refreshing dips that capture the wild essence of Lapland’s northern nature.
