** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Tschida, a reservoir in southwestern North Dakota, experiences marked seasonal variation in surface water temperature. In spring the surface typically warms from about 45–60°F (7–16°C) as ice melts and runoff diminishes. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with surface temperatures commonly ranging from roughly 65–80°F (18–27°C) on sunny days; however, deeper water can remain substantially cooler, often 10–15°F (6–8°C) below surface readings. In early fall temperatures generally fall back into the 50–65°F (10–18°C) range before the lake cools to near-freezing and often freezes over in winter, at or below 32°F (0°C). Year-to-year weather, wind, and inflows influence these values, so local measurements will vary.
Swimming at Lake Tschida is generally allowed in open recreation areas because the reservoir is managed for multiple public uses including bathing, boating, and fishing. Designated shoreline and beach areas are used by visitors during the warm season, but permanent lifeguard coverage is uncommon and conditions can change quickly. Swimmers should be aware of cold-water shock from deeper or spring-influenced pockets, boat traffic, drop-offs, and variable water quality, and they should heed posted advisories and seasonal access rules before entering the water.
