*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Pocasse experiences the same seasonal swings typical of small South Dakota lakes. After ice-out in spring, surface temperatures commonly rise from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the water mixes and warms. By midsummer the surface often reaches roughly 65–80°F (18–27°C) on warm days, with the warmest readings usually in July and August; beneath the surface and in deeper pockets the water remains cooler. In early fall temperatures generally fall back into the 50–65°F (10–18°C) range as cooling and turnover set in, and in winter the lake freezes or approaches near-freezing conditions around 32°F (0°C), ending open-water swimming for the season.
Swimming at Lake Pocasse is typically permitted during the ice-free months because there are no inherent legal prohibitions on recreational use of many small public lakes, but actual access and rules depend on local management and posted signage. Water quality, presence or absence of lifeguards, aquatic vegetation, and temperature are the main factors affecting safety: water under about 60°F (15°C) can feel uncomfortably cold and increases risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia, while warmer summer surface temperatures are more comfortable for bathing. Always check current advisories or rules at the shoreline and exercise judgment about conditions before entering the water.
