*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Red Rock is a large reservoir on the Des Moines River, and its water temperature varies substantially through the year. In winter the surface often approaches freezing, typically about 33–40°F (0.5–4°C). Spring brings a rapid warm-up with surface readings commonly in the 40–65°F (4–18°C) range as snowmelt and inflows cool or mix the water. Peak summer surface temperatures usually occur from July into early September, commonly ranging from roughly 68–82°F (20–28°C) and occasionally rising slightly higher in shallow, sheltered bays; deeper water stays noticeably cooler. By autumn the surface typically drops into the 50–70°F (10–21°C) window as air temperatures fall and stratification breaks down.
Swimming is permitted in many shoreline locations around Lake Red Rock but is generally limited to designated or posted areas managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and visitors should observe site-specific signs. There are few if any lifeguarded beaches, boat traffic, changing currents near the dam and creek inlets, submerged hazards and steep drop-offs that make some spots unsafe, so swimmers are advised to choose marked areas during the warmest months (primarily June–August) when surface temperatures are most comfortable and to be cautious in early spring or late fall when cold water can pose hypothermia risk.
