** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Coldwater Lake in southern Michigan follows the typical seasonal pattern for midwestern inland lakes. In winter the lake surface commonly reaches around freezing, roughly 32–38°F (0–3°C), and can develop stable ice cover in colder months. During spring thaw the surface warms from about 40–60°F (4–15°C) as the lake mixes, while summer brings the warmest conditions with surface temperatures often in the 68–78°F range (20–26°C) on hot afternoons; deeper water remains colder and a thermocline can form on calm, warm days. Early fall sees a steady cooling back toward 50–65°F (10–18°C) as the lake begins to turnover.
Swimming is generally permitted and commonly enjoyed in summer when surface temperatures are comfortable for recreational bathing, particularly at public access points or private beaches. However, conditions vary: there are usually no lifeguards, water clarity and quality can change with runoff or algal growth, and boating traffic and submerged vegetation can pose hazards. Cold spring or autumn water carries a risk of cold-water shock, and winter ice should not be assumed safe for swimming or walking without proper checks. For safe enjoyment, swimmers should choose established access areas, be mindful of weather, and heed any local advisories.
