*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Apple Canyon Lake is a small reservoir in northwestern Illinois that experiences the full range of Midwestern seasonal temperatures. In winter the surface can drop to near freezing and often freezes over (around 32°F/0°C). Spring brings a steady rise, with water commonly in the 40s to low 60s °F (about 4–16°C) as the lake thaws and warms. Summer is when surface temperatures are most inviting for swimmers; typical summer readings are in the mid-70s to around 80°F (about 24–27°C), and during heat spells the surface can occasionally reach the upper 70s to low 80s °F (about 26–28°C). By autumn the water cools again, commonly falling into the 50s to low 60s °F (about 10–16°C) before approaching freezing as winter returns.
Swimming at Apple Canyon Lake is permitted in designated areas and is seasonal, primarily during late spring through early fall when temperatures are safest for bathing. The community maintains specific beach and swim zones where water quality and safety guidelines are monitored, which is why swimming is concentrated there rather than broadly around the shoreline. Outside posted seasons or areas the water can be cold, deep, and uneven, so swimmers are advised to follow local rules and exercise caution given changing temperatures and conditions.
