*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Sheffield, known as the “Outdoor City,” is shaped by its rivers, with the River Don flowing through its heart and several tributaries joining from the surrounding hills. The Don’s temperature in Sheffield reflects both the upland origins of its water and the region’s mild, temperate climate. In winter, the river usually remains between 3 and 5°C (37–41°F), staying cold and lively after rainfall. By spring, it warms gradually to about 8–10°C (46–50°F). During midsummer—especially in July and August—the temperature can reach 15–17°C (59–63°F) in calmer stretches and weirs, offering relatively comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. As autumn approaches, the water cools again to around 10–12°C (50–54°F), maintaining a clean, fresh feel through most of the year.
Swimming in the River Don within Sheffield is allowed in certain areas and has become more common as water quality has improved. Wild swimmers often use safe, accessible points near Meadowhall and quieter upstream stretches, although strong currents can occur after heavy rain. The city’s close connection to nature also provides many alternatives for water-based recreation, such as nearby reservoirs and lidos. Beyond swimming, Sheffield offers green riverside trails, canal paths, and easy access to the Peak District, combining urban energy with natural surroundings.
