In Sumy, the Psel River experiences a wide annual range of water temperatures due to the region’s continental climate. In winter, the river often freezes, and water temperatures remain close to 0°C. With the arrival of spring, the ice melts, and the temperature gradually rises to around 10–12°C in April. By early summer, it warms up considerably, reaching 20–23°C in June, and during the hottest periods of July and August, the water can occasionally climb to 25°C, especially in shallower sections. In September, it starts cooling again, dropping below 18°C, and by late autumn it becomes too cold for comfortable swimming.
Swimming in the Psel within Sumy is most enjoyable from mid-June to late August, when the water feels mild and refreshing. The riverbanks in some parts of the city are sandy or gently sloping, making it convenient for bathing. However, swimmers should be mindful of the current, vegetation, and occasional uneven bottom. Outside of the summer months, swimming is mostly limited to enthusiasts of cold water bathing.
