Location & Local Information
The city of Kakhovka, prior to June 2023, was situated on the bank of the Kakhovka Reservoir, which was the largest by volume on the Dnieper River. Due to its southern location, the water temperature in the reservoir was significantly higher than in the northern parts of the Dnieper, especially in late summer and autumn. In July and August, the water regularly warmed up to a comfortable 24−26∘C and even higher, contributing to a very long and pleasant swimming season. Compared to the upstream reservoirs, the water near Kakhovka maintained its warmth for a longer period.
Swimming opportunities in Kakhovka were closely tied to the existence of the Kakhovka Reservoir and the city's beach infrastructure, which offered wide sandy areas. The reservoir provided calm waters suitable for swimming, boating, and other recreation. Unfortunately, following the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP in June 2023, the situation changed drastically. The reservoir was drained, and swimming became impossible due to the absence of the large body of water, danger, and contamination. Reports indicate that warning signs prohibiting swimming due to the danger of mines have appeared on the former reservoir bed.
