Baden is located along the Limmat, a river that flows out of Lake Zurich and passes directly through the town. Water temperature in the Limmat near Baden reflects both seasonal weather and controlled lake outflow. In winter, temperatures usually range from about 4–6 °C (39–43 °F). During spring, the river slowly warms to around 10–15 °C (50–59 °F). Summer brings the highest values, typically about 18–22 °C (64–72 °F), with short peaks slightly above this during hot periods. In autumn, temperatures gradually fall back below 15 °C (59 °F).
Swimming in the Limmat at Baden is allowed and has a long local tradition. River swimming is popular in summer, especially on warm days, as the current is generally manageable and the water quality is good. However, swimmers must be aware of changing flow conditions, cooler temperatures compared to lakes, and designated entry and exit points. Outside the summer season, the water becomes cold quickly and is mainly suitable for experienced cold-water swimmers.
