Ascona lies on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore and enjoys one of the mildest climates in Switzerland. The lake’s water temperature changes gradually through the year. In winter, it usually cools to about 6–8 °C (43–46 °F). During spring, warming accelerates and temperatures typically reach around 14–18 °C (57–64 °F). Summer brings the most pleasant conditions, with July and August surface temperatures commonly ranging from 22–26 °C (72–79 °F). In autumn, the lake retains heat well and often stays above 18 °C (64 °F) well into September and early October.
Swimming in Lake Maggiore at Ascona is fully allowed and very popular. The lake has calm waters, good water quality, and numerous public lidos and accessible shore areas. Thanks to its size and depth, the lake warms slowly but also cools slowly, extending the swimming season compared to most Swiss lakes. Summer offers comfortable conditions for all swimmers, while late spring and early autumn remain suitable for those tolerant of slightly cooler water.
