Sombor, a town in the northwest of Serbia, lies in a lowland region surrounded by small rivers, canals, and ponds, most notably the Great Bačka Canal and nearby natural lakes. The area experiences a temperate continental climate, which influences the water temperature throughout the year. In spring, local waters usually range between 12 and 17 °C, while in summer they warm up to 22–26 °C, occasionally reaching 27 °C during heatwaves. In autumn, the temperature gradually decreases to around 14–18 °C, and in winter it often falls below 5 °C, with some shallower areas partially freezing.
Swimming is officially allowed in designated areas, particularly along parts of the Great Bačka Canal and artificial lakes maintained for recreation. During summer, these waters are popular among locals for swimming, rowing, and fishing, as temperatures are generally comfortable and water quality is monitored. However, swimming outside marked zones can be risky due to currents or less clean sections. Warm summers, flat landscapes, and accessible freshwater spots make Sombor an inviting place for outdoor recreation and seasonal bathing.
