Karpenisi (in Greek - Καρπενήσι) in Central Greece sits amid high, forested mountains and is surrounded by several mountain lakes and reservoirs whose water temperatures reflect the elevation and shade. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range from about 2–6 °C (35.6–42.8 °F) in winter, 6–14 °C (42.8–57.2 °F) in spring, and roughly 18–24 °C (64.4–75.2 °F) in summer; early autumn commonly sees 15–20 °C (59–68 °F). In shallow, sheltered bays on warm summer days temperatures can occasionally climb into the mid-20s °C (around 77–79 °F), but overall the water remains noticeably cooler than coastal swimming areas because of altitude and inflows from mountain streams.
Swimming is possible in the Karpenisi area, particularly during the warmest months, but it is not uniformly permitted everywhere.
