Geesthacht is a city in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany, located on the banks of the Elbe River. As the largest city on the river in the region, it offers several water-based recreational activities. The water temperature of the Elbe River near Geesthacht varies throughout the year, quite dependent on the seasons. In the warmer summer months, the water temperature can reach up to 20°C (68°F), making it quite suitable for various water activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing.
However, as for the safety of swimming in the Elbe river, it is crucial to note that it is not generally advised due to strong currents and regular shipping movements, especially near the city like Geesthacht. Although the river isn't officially closed for swimming, the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG) has frequently pointed out the challenges of swimming there, due to the changing tides and heavy commercial shipping traffic. So, even though the temperatures in summer are apt for swimming, for safety reasons, it's recommended to use designated swimming and recreational areas such as Freibad Geesthacht, a local open-air swimming pool site.
