*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Guelph, located in southern Ontario, is surrounded by small lakes, reservoirs, and rivers, most notably the Speed River and Guelph Lake, which are central to local recreation. Water temperatures in these inland bodies vary widely with the seasons due to their relatively shallow depths. In winter, temperatures hover just above freezing, typically 0–2 °C (32–36 °F), with ice often forming on the lake’s surface. During spring, meltwater keeps temperatures low at 5–10 °C (41–50 °F), gradually rising as the days lengthen. By summer, the water in Guelph Lake can reach a comfortable 20–25 °C (68–77 °F), while the Speed River tends to stay a few degrees cooler because of its steady flow. In autumn, temperatures drop again to 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) as nights become cooler.
Swimming in Guelph is popular during the warm months, especially at the Guelph Lake Conservation Area, where designated beaches and safety supervision are available. The swimming season usually extends from late June through early September, when the water is warm enough for comfortable bathing. Outside this period, the cold temperatures and unpredictable river currents make swimming less suitable. Nevertheless, the clean and scenic surroundings of Guelph’s rivers and lakes offer ideal spots for kayaking, canoeing, and nature observation throughout the year.
