Water Temperature Trends
Arkhangelsk Oblast, located in the northern part of Russia along the White Sea and the Barents Sea, has a cold maritime climate that influences the water temperatures in the region. In summer, the sea water temperature along the coast is relatively cool, typically ranging from 8°C to 12°C (46°F to 54°F). This makes swimming in the sea challenging due to the chilly waters, although it is suitable for certain cold-water activities such as sailing and fishing. The coastal areas are also known for their unique ecosystem, with the colder waters attracting diverse marine life.
In the rivers and lakes of Arkhangelsk Oblast, the water temperature follows a similar trend, with the rivers such as the Northern Dvina and the Onega River showing temperatures between 10°C and 16°C (50°F to 61°F) during the summer months. These rivers provide an excellent environment for fishing, and although the waters are too cold for long swimming sessions, they are still a popular spot for outdoor activities. In spring and autumn, the river water temperature drops further, reaching around 3°C to 8°C (37°F to 46°F), which is too cold for comfortable swimming but still supports fishing and other activities like kayaking.
In winter, the temperature of both the rivers and lakes can fall to around 0°C to 2°C (32°F to 36°F), causing the rivers to freeze over and making most lakes covered in ice. This creates opportunities for ice fishing and winter sports, though water-based activities are limited during the coldest months. Even the sea around Arkhangelsk can experience ice formation near the shore, further restricting maritime activities during the harsh winter period.
