Water Temperature Trends
The North Aegean region of Greece is known for its picturesque islands and extensive coastline, where sea temperatures vary seasonally but remain generally inviting. During the summer months (June to September), sea temperatures average between 23–26°C (73–79°F), offering warm and comfortable conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities. Beaches like Molyvos on Lesvos and Psili Ammos on Samos are particularly popular during this time.
In spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November), the sea temperatures cool slightly, ranging from 18–22°C (64–72°F). These moderate temperatures attract visitors who prefer a quieter coastal experience while still enjoying the waters. The region’s islands, such as Chios, Lemnos, and Ikaria, provide diverse opportunities for swimming and exploring the coastal environment.
Unlike the coastal waters, rivers and lakes in the North Aegean region are less prominent. The rivers are typically small and seasonal, with cooler temperatures ranging from 12–18°C (54–64°F), depending on the time of year. While swimming in rivers is less common, they contribute to the lush landscapes and unique ecosystems of the islands. Lakes in this region are rare, but the focus remains on the beautiful and accessible Aegean Sea, which is the main draw for locals and tourists alike.
