The Yeşilırmak Nehri (Yeşilırmak) runs through Samsun province to the Black Sea and shows marked seasonal shifts in water temperature. In winter the river commonly cools to roughly 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), spring warming moves temperatures into the neighborhood of 8–15 °C (46–59 °F), summer surface temperatures in calmer stretches often reach about 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), and autumn sees cooling to approximately 10–16 °C (50–61 °F). These figures vary with depth, flow rate, recent precipitation and upstream snowmelt; shallower and slower side channels heat more in summer, while fast main-channel currents stay cooler.
Swimming opportunities on the Yeşilırmak in and around Samsun are limited and conditional. In urban and lower reaches swimming is generally not recommended because of variable water quality, agricultural and municipal runoff, strong currents in places, and boat traffic; local regulations or signage may prohibit bathing for safety and public-health reasons. In upstream or sheltered backwater areas, where water is clearer and flow is gentler, locals sometimes swim during the warmest months when temperatures approach the higher summer range.
