** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

• location near Dromina, County Cork
Mouth Shannon Estuary
• location Mantlehill, County Limerick
Length 63.2 km (39.3 mi)
The River Deel flows for about 60 km through Counties Cork and Limerick in southwest Ireland before entering the Shannon Estuary near Askeaton. Given its inland and estuarine mixture, the water temperature of the Deel varies with the seasons and local conditions. In winter the surface likely hovers around 4–6 °C (39–43 °F); during summer the shallows may warm to about 15–18 °C (59–64 °F). On particularly calm, sunny days and in slower stretches, temperatures could briefly approach 19 °C (66 °F). Because the river flows steadily and is influenced by cooler upland sources and estuarine mixing, the water tends to remain refreshingly cool even in peak summer.
Swimming in the River Deel is technically permitted, but in practice it is less common and requires caution. Many stretches of the river are more suited to angling, boating or walking along its banks rather than formal bathing. Swimmers should pick shallow, slow-moving sections with safe entry and exit points, especially during the warm summer months when water conditions are more comfortable. Beyond swimming, the river valley offers attractive scenery and heritage: the town of Askeaton with its medieval castle and abbey lies by the Deel’s lower reaches, while upstream places like Rathkeale and Mahoonagh provide quiet rural landscapes and riverside walks.
