The Oulujoki River flows through North Ostrobothnia in northern Finland, connecting Lake Oulujärvi to the Gulf of Bothnia at Oulu. It is a wide and regulated river system with several hydroelectric dams, yet many sections still feature calm water suitable for recreation. The water temperature in Oulujoki varies greatly with the season. In spring, after the ice melts in April or early May, the surface temperature is typically around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest period, the water reaches 17–20 °C (63–68 °F). In sheltered and shallow areas, temperatures may briefly reach 21–22 °C (70–72 °F). By late September, the river cools again below 10 °C (50 °F).
Swimming in the Oulujoki River is allowed, and there are several designated swimming spots near Oulu and smaller towns along the river. The water quality is generally good, though it may appear slightly brown due to natural humus from upstream lakes and forests. Calm stretches near riverbanks are safe for swimming, while areas near power plants or strong currents are not recommended. During summer, Oulujoki offers refreshing swimming opportunities with easy access and scenic northern surroundings.
