The Oster River, being a tributary of the Desna, is generally shallow and slow in many stretches, with widths of 10–30 meters and depths often between 0.2 m and 1.5 m in its lower course. In the warmest parts of summer, especially in sunny, slow-flowing backwaters, surface water can heat up to around 20–24 °C, making swimming fairly pleasant in suitable spots. But even then, deeper channels or shaded zones remain cooler, and the current or underwater vegetation may limit safe bathing.
Outside of mid-summer, water in the Oster cools rather quickly. In late spring and early autumn, temperatures may hover in the 12–16 °C range, which is chilly and more suitable for brief dips rather than extended swims. In late autumn and winter, the river cools further, and by December parts of it may freeze or become unsafe due to low temperature and ice cover.
Another consideration is water quality and river condition. The Oster is subject to fluctuations in flow, occasional shallowing, and possible pollution or algal growth during warm, low-flow periods. Thus, while swimming is possible in some stretches under good summer conditions, one must carefully assess the spot (depth, clarity, access) and avoid parts where flow is strong or water is murky.
