Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. Even experienced swimmers may feel discomfort if they stay in the water for too long. To improve comfort and safety, a wetsuit can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. ** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Gaula in Trøndelag is a mountain-fed river with water temperatures that vary strongly through the year. In winter the river is typically close to freezing, about 0–3 °C (32–37 °F), though parts can be slightly warmer where groundwater inflow occurs. During spring, snowmelt and runoff keep temperatures cool, commonly around 2–8 °C (36–46 °F). Summer brings the warmest conditions in calmer, shallow stretches, with typical values of roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F), while autumn sees a steady cooling to around 5–10 °C (41–50 °F). Local variations are frequent: depth, flow rate, recent rainfall, and shading from vegetation all affect spot temperatures, so readings can differ between pools and faster rapids.
Swimming in the Gaula is generally possible but not universally advisable. There is no blanket prohibition on entering the water, yet strong currents, cold temperatures outside mid-summer, and uneven riverbeds present real hazards; hypothermia can set in quickly when temperatures are low. Additionally, anglers and conservation considerations for salmon may make some stretches less suitable for casual bathing. Where calmer, shallower pools and beaches occur and conditions are warm, people do swim, but it is important to exercise caution, wear a life jacket in fast sections, and heed local signs or guidance to ensure safety and respect for the river’s ecological and recreational uses.
