Velenje Lake (Velenjsko jezero) is one of the largest artificial lakes in Slovenia, created by mining activities but today transformed into a popular recreational spot. Thanks to its relatively low altitude and depth, the water warms up nicely in summer. From June to August, surface temperatures usually reach 22–25°C, and during heat waves it can even rise to 26°C. In spring and autumn, the water is cooler, typically between 12–18°C, while in winter it drops close to 4–6°C.
Because of these pleasant summer conditions, Velenje Lake is very well known for swimming and water sports. There is a maintained beach area with facilities, making it suitable for families as well as more active visitors. People come here not only to swim but also to sail, windsurf, or paddleboard. Outside the warm season, swimming is less common, but the lake remains a lively destination for walking and relaxation by the water.
