*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Ute Lake in northeastern New Mexico experiences a wide range of water temperatures over the year due to its shallow-to-moderate depths and continental climate. In spring the surface usually runs cool, roughly 50–68°F (10–20°C) as runoff and seasonal cooling persist. Peak summer warmth tends to bring temperatures into the low to mid 70s up to the mid 80s, about 72–86°F (22–30°C), when swimming is most comfortable. Autumn sees a progressive cooling back toward roughly 55–72°F (13–22°C), and in winter the lake can fall to near freezing or into the 34–50°F range (1–10°C) at the surface depending on air temperatures and winds.
Swimming is allowed at Ute Lake State Park in designated recreation areas, and many visitors swim in the summer months when surface temperatures are warmest. Local rules, posted signage and seasonal advisories govern where and when swimming is permitted; staff may close specific areas for safety or water-quality reasons. Even in summer, swimmers should be mindful of no-lifeguard conditions, changing water levels, boat traffic and occasional algal or debris issues, and recognize that outside the warmest weeks the water is often too cold for prolonged, comfortable swimming.
