Thornton Reservoir’s water temperature follows the typical pattern for shallow Midlands reservoirs. In winter the surface can sit around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), with spring warming to roughly 6–14 °C (43–57 °F) as the sun and air temperatures rise. Summer surface temperatures commonly reach 15–22 °C (59–72 °F) on warmer days but will stratify and cool with depth, and autumn sees a steady fall back towards 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) as the air chills. Conditions vary year to year with weather, wind and rainfall, and deeper or shaded areas stay noticeably colder than shallow sunny shallows.
Swimming in the reservoir is generally not permitted for safety and conservation reasons: cold water shock, unpredictable currents, hidden underwater hazards and water quality concerns make unsupervised bathing risky, and the site is managed principally for fishing, sailing and wildlife. Visitors often enjoy walking the perimeter paths, birdwatching, angling and model boating instead, and nearby attractions include peaceful countryside villages, picnic spots and heritage sites such as Bosworth Battlefield and the Market Bosworth area.
