Little Manitou Lake, located near Watrous in southern Saskatchewan, is a unique saline lake often compared to the Dead Sea because of its high mineral content and natural buoyancy. The lake’s salinity affects how it warms and cools through the seasons, and it generally stays warmer than most freshwater lakes in the province. In early spring, following the ice melt in April, surface temperatures average around 41–46°F (5–8°C). By late May and June, the lake warms steadily to about 55–63°F (13–17°C). During midsummer, from July through August, surface temperatures often reach 68–75°F (20–24°C), with shallower areas sometimes becoming even warmer. By late September, the water cools again below 59°F (15°C) as fall temperatures return.
Swimming in Little Manitou Lake is not only allowed but highly popular, particularly because of its natural buoyancy that allows swimmers to float effortlessly. The mineral-rich water is also believed to have therapeutic properties, attracting visitors seeking relaxation and wellness.
