** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Sharpe, a reservoir on the Missouri River in central South Dakota, experiences a wide seasonal range in water temperature because of its depth, flow and regional climate. In winter the surface often approaches freezing, around 32°F (0°C) or lower where ice forms. Spring thawing brings temperatures up from roughly 35–60°F (2–16°C) as snowmelt and cold inflow persist. By late spring and early summer the shallows typically warm to about 55–70°F (13–21°C), while peak summer surface readings commonly reach the 70s to low 80s °F (21–28°C) on warm days. In autumn the lake cools again, with surface temperatures generally falling into the 50s–60s °F (10–18°C) depending on air temperatures and wind.
Swimming at Lake Sharpe is permitted in many public access areas and recreation sites managed by the state and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which makes it a common summer activity. However, swimmers should be cautious: reservoir currents, boat traffic, submerged timber and sudden drop-offs can create hazards, and even in summer deeper or flowing water can remain cool enough to cause cold-water shock. There are relatively few guarded beaches, and ice cover in winter makes swimming unsafe during colder months. Observing posted rules, using life jackets and avoiding areas near the dam or heavy boat lanes helps reduce risk.
