Location & Local Information
Lake Sara is a mid-Illinois reservoir whose surface water temperature changes markedly with the seasons. In winter the lake often approaches freezing, roughly 33–40°F (1–4°C) at the surface, and ice can form on calmer areas. Spring brings a steady rise, with surface temperatures commonly between 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the water mixes and warms. In summer the surface frequently reaches 70–80°F (21–27°C) and on hot spells can climb into the low 80s°F (27–29°C), making conditions most comfortable for bathing; deeper water remains cooler. By fall the lake cools again into the 60–40°F range (16–4°C) as air temperatures drop and stratification breaks down.
Swimming is permitted as part of Lake Sara’s recreational use, generally in park-designated areas, but access and conditions are governed by local park rules and occasional safety or health advisories. There are times when beaches or swim zones may be closed because of high bacterial counts after heavy runoff, visible blue‑green algae blooms, or for safety reasons such as the absence of lifeguards; visitors are advised to heed posted notices. Water temperature is the main factor in seasonal comfort, so most swimming activity occurs in late spring through early fall when surface temperatures are warmest.
