*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Waterbury, located in central Connecticut along the Naugatuck River, experiences a humid continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, which greatly affects water temperatures in local rivers and lakes. During winter, water temperatures in the Naugatuck River and nearby lakes such as Scovill Reservoir or Hop Brook Lake typically range from 0–3 °C (32–37 °F), and ice can form on smaller bodies of water. In spring, as the snow melts and temperatures rise, the water gradually warms to around 8–15 °C (46–59 °F). By midsummer, surface temperatures in area lakes often reach 22–26 °C (72–79 °F), while rivers like the Naugatuck remain slightly cooler due to flowing water. In autumn, the water cools again to 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) before returning to near-freezing conditions in winter.
Swimming in and around Waterbury is allowed only in designated recreation areas, primarily at nearby managed lakes and parks. During the summer months, from late June through early September, the water is comfortably warm for swimming, and local facilities such as Hop Brook Lake offer safe, maintained swimming zones. The Naugatuck River itself is not suitable for swimming because of currents and variable water quality. Outside the warm season, cold temperatures make swimming unsafe, though the region remains popular for fishing, kayaking, and nature activities.
