The River Itchen in Southampton, a significant chalk stream, exhibits a pronounced seasonal temperature range typical of the South of England. In winter, the water temperature commonly drops to between 3∘C to 7∘C (37∘F to 45∘F), a dangerous range due to the risk of cold water shock.
