*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Christchurch, a coastal town in Dorset, lies at the meeting point of the Rivers Stour and Avon before they flow into Christchurch Harbour and the English Channel. The River Stour here reflects the mild maritime climate of southern England, with water temperatures that vary steadily through the seasons. In winter, it generally remains between 5 and 7°C (41–45°F), staying cold but rarely freezing. By spring, the river warms to around 9–12°C (48–54°F). During midsummer—especially in July and August—the water can reach 17–20°C (63–68°F) in calm, sunlit areas, offering some of the most comfortable freshwater temperatures in the region. As autumn arrives, it cools again to about 11–13°C (52–55°F), keeping a refreshing yet mild quality well into late October.
Swimming in the River Stour at Christchurch is popular and permitted, particularly in the quieter upper sections away from the harbour mouth. The water is generally clean, though care is needed around tidal areas where the current can change quickly. Many people enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply cooling off in shallow areas during summer. The town’s riverside setting adds to its charm, with nearby attractions such as Christchurch Priory, Mudeford Quay, and Hengistbury Head offering scenic walks and coastal views.
