Kars (Turkish: Kars) sits on a high plateau in northeastern Turkey, and its lakes and rivers reflect that continental, high‑altitude climate. The large freshwater Çıldır Lake typically freezes in winter, with water at or just below 0 °C (32 °F) under ice; spring thaw brings surface temperatures from roughly 1–8 °C (34–46 °F). In summer the shallow areas of lakes and sheltered bays can warm to about 8–16 °C (46–61 °F), occasionally approaching 18 °C (64 °F) during unusually hot spells. Rivers and mountain streams fed by snowmelt are colder year round: expect spring values of about 2–8 °C (36–46 °F) and summer readings often in the 4–14 °C (39–57 °F) range, with autumn cooling back toward near‑freezing.
Swimming in Kars’s inland waters is possible only in a limited, seasonal sense and is rarely a mass recreational activity. There are generally no widespread public swimming facilities or lifeguarded beaches, and the cold water temperatures—even in mid‑summer—pose a real hypothermia risk; fast currents, sudden depth changes, and remote access make river swimming particularly hazardous.
