Kars (Turkish: Kars) sits on a high plateau in northeastern Turkey, and its lakes and rivers reflect that continental, high‑altitude climate. The large freshwater Çıldır Lake typically freezes in winter, with water at or just below 0 °C (32 °F) under ice; spring thaw brings surface temperatures from roughly 1–8 °C (34–46 °F).
